This was taken at about 7PM just after sunset.Lighting
The only lighting I had was a spotlight from the guide so that I could manually focus. A flash was used creating the reflectionEquipment
Canon 1Ds II with a Canon 100-400L @ 400mm along with a flashInspiration
Any time you see a massive lion, it is impressive and to be able to catch him drinking at night is just a dream. The photo turned out better than I could possibly expect.Editing
Post processing was basic working with levels and sharpening to bring out the best in the image. In my camera bag
This was taken long ago, so my equipment has changed. When on safari, I carry 3 camera bodies, a Canon 7D II, Canon 1Dx and Canon 5D III. The lenses I have on those cameras respectively are Canon 400 DO with 1.4x, Canon 100-400 L II and 70-200 L 2.8 III. I have other lenses but those are my primary onces.Feedback
Obviously this is not a shot you get locally in a city. if you go on safari, make sure you have good equipment with a high quality flash. Know you equipment well as you may only get one chance to get a photo like this.
