Location
This photo was taken near the small village of Santa Anita in Ecuador. Specifically, the image was captured near the beginning of the foothills leading up to the Chimborazo volcano. At 6,268 meters, Volcan Chimborazo is the highest peak in the Ecuadorian Andes. It was once believed to be the highest mountain in the world and, because of this planet's equatorial bulge, its summit is the furthest point from the center of the earth and the closest to the sun.Time
This photo was taken at approximately 8 AM. The morning clouds were beginning to part and reveal occasional glimpses of the distant volcano, but, as can be seen here, the lower foothills were still engulfed in clouds and fog.Lighting
The light in this photo was entirely natural. The low hanging clouds filtered the morning light and produced a softly muted scene.Equipment
I used a Sony Alpha 100 DSLR with a Tamron 18-200 mm zoom lens.Inspiration
Any inspiration for this photo was purely impromptu. Indeed it could not have been otherwise. The image is totally opportunistic, having been taken over the top of the cab from the open bed of a moving truck. I was being transported to a spot uphill from which to begin a hike to the base of Chimborazo's glaciers. I was just keeping my eyes open for any photo opportunities that I could spot during the drive. I saw the herders shepherding their livestock in the road ahead, steadied my camera with my hands and arms as best I could and hoped for the best. Usually little is to be expected from shots taken from a moving vehicle, so I was quite pleasantly surprised by the success of this image.Editing
This image was processed pretty normally for brightness, contrast and color balance in both Lightroom and Photoshop. The sheepherder was selected and brightened in order to bring his figure out more from the shadows. The overall image was then slightly enhanced with the Topaz Detail plug-in.In my camera bag
Since my photography is heavily travel oriented, often involving hiking by foot, I like to keep my gear to a minimum. Currently, I normally carry a Sony Alpha 560 DSLR, a Tamron 18-200 mm zoom lens and a polarizing filter in a camera holster worn around my waist for quick camera access. A tripod is always brought, but is not always carried and thus not necessarily readily available. Because of the catastrophic consequences of potential camera electrical malfunction, I also aways bring a spare camera body while traveling.Feedback
This rural image is essentially an instance of instantaneously captured street photography. The only advice I can give is to keep your eyes open, your camera handy and be ready to shot quickly.
