Location
This photo was taken in Saint Augustine, Florida.Time
It was late morning/early afternoonLighting
Timing is everything and I was just at the right place at the right time. The lighting is natural sunlight. Nothing special, nothing fancy, & no flash.Equipment
Sony a55 Camera (handheld) with Sony 55-200 lens. No other equipment was neededInspiration
I noticed this big beautiful 3" grasshopper watching me from atop a rail... I was poolside and picked up my camera to move in for a closer look - He didn't seem to mind my presence & almost almost seemed interested in me. (Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers are pretty common in Florida, their attractive yellow, red & black color pattern serve as a warning to predators. The Eastern Lubber can spray toxin at predators to protect itself... They also hiss!) This grasshopper wasn't bothered by our mini photo session & stayed perfectly posed on the rail while I did my thing. Just look at that those colors! He has character & personality - That's what inspired me to take the photo. I didn't set out to take photos that day. Moments like this make me glad I take my camera everywhereEditing
very light post processing & just a little bit of a cropIn my camera bag
My bag is pretty compact and only weighs 4.5 lbs which, I think is pretty light considering everything that's kept inside. I always keep my camera, a couple lenses (18-55,55, & 55-200), a mini collapsible tripod, UV & ND filters, an extra memory card, battery, charger, and a microfiber cleaning clothFeedback
This was a spontaneous capture. My best advise is to take your camera everywhere and be ready for any thing. If something catches your eye then photograph it... Common subject?? think about similar photos you have seen & get creative..Walk around your subject, shoot from above/below/left/right & try to capture if from an unusual angle.
