The Great Poppy, Papaver rhoeas, is striking, often seen in large numbers on roadsides or embankments along newly constructed roads in clayey regions. But if the bottom is left alone, it gradually disappears. The dark scarlet color of the fairly large flowers also stands out in the grain fields where it originally made its home. It is known that after the First World War, the battlefields in northern France turned red from the many poppies that germinated on the areas where the trenches and mass graves were. The poppy has therefore become a symbol for the veterans of the War.
