Location
This photo was taken in a cloud forest of a natural reserve dedicated to the Conservation of Birds and their habitats, located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - Colombia. This bird is totally wild.Time
For most photographers, taking a shot during the hours when the light is harshest and produces areas of very strong shadows, it would be preferable to wait until dawn or perhaps dusk to achieve a beautiful photo with a light that stands out. the details of the subject to be photographed, but in this case, the fact that the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is located in the Colombian Caribbean (it is the highest coastal mountain in the World, with 5,775 masl, .m.) gives you the possibility of having all the thermal floors, among them, beautiful cloud forests, which are the habitat of this beautiful Endemic Species of Hummingbird and this allowed that regardless of the time in which I took this photograph: 2:25 PM And despite the fact that it was a sunny day in the rest of the region, here in this area of ??cloud forests, the clouds act as a kind of natural filter and create an atmosphere conducive to taking this type of wildlife photography.Lighting
I always seek that my photographs reflect the essence of natural colors at the time of capture, that is why I try to photograph in the morning or at sunset but in this case with this Hummingbird, the natural light that appeared despite having been taken after noon allowed me to capture that beautiful atmosphere.Equipment
This was shot on a Panasonic, with the following parameters: 1/125s f/5.2 ISO: 320. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
Colombia is the country with the highest number of Bird Species in the World and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, located in the Colombian Caribbean is the place with the highest number of ENDEMIC Bird Species in the American continent (Endemic means that it is a unique species and it is only found in that specific point: an ecosystem, an area, a region, a country or continent). Their condition of Endemic, makes them very little known Species by the vast majority of the inhabitants of both the area and the country and the rest of the world due to the fact that they are restricted to a specific reduced habitat such as, for example, this Hummingbird Species only It is found in a very small area, in the cloud forests located in the upper part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. Through Wildlife photography, I try to make known not only to the inhabitants of Santa Marta and Colombia but to the rest of the World, the wonderful Biodiversity that we have around us and above all, the importance of helping to protect the habitat of these species that are unfortunately in danger of extinction.Editing
No, I didn't. The only thing I do on some occasions is a minimal white adjustment. In my camera bag
Normally the first thing I pack is my camera, either Panasoni, Samsung, Canon or Nikon ,,, everything depends on the economic availability that I have at the moment since in Colombia it is very expensive for me to be able to access a Photographic Equipment of the most high-end, therefore, I have always been aware that the most important thing is to keep alive the passion for this beautiful Art of capturing, freezing, immortalizing those unique and unrepeatable moments that appear before our eyes, always adapting to the tool of work that I have available at that time. I also pack a good tripod as I love taking sunset photos and night photography (long exposure). My latest camera has been the Nikon D7100 with 18-140mm Lenses and 70-300mm Lens, along with a flash.Feedback
Santa Marta and its captivating Sierra Nevada at the foot of the Caribbean Sea, offers a wide range of spectacular natural landscapes in addition to its incredible Biodiversity, especially the Birds, which makes it a worldwide favorite place for Photography of these "Winged Jewels". At the same time, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta has a very varied climate, practically different from the coastal area, which represents a challenge for any photographer in these changing climates because in the morning hours it can be a bright, sunny day and in a matter of minutes it becomes completely covered by the fog and in addition to it a strong rain with an electric storm included, but after a few minutes or a couple of hours it clears up again and shows some dream landscapes and at the same time, they begin to reactivate the birds again, giving us this spectacle of colors without equal. I always recommend people to come with the best disposition, always being positive, being prepared, knowing the behavior of said Bird Species to know what hours they are most active and thus have a greater probability of success to achieve a great record, but before everything, ALWAYS BE FILLED WITH A LOT OF PATIENCE.
