Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the mouth of the Don Diego River, which is one of the three rivers that are born directly in the glacier area of the peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta - (Colombia) and it is at this point where its waters they meet the Caribbean Sea.

Time

This image was taken at sunset time, approximately 5:30 in the afternoon.

Lighting

I really think that Sunset is my favorite time to photograph because the wonderful light of that moment gives a magical touch to the whole environment and I do my best to capture those natural colors without having to use the flash or other additional accessories to illuminate the object to be photographed.

Equipment

This photo was taken only with a Compact Digital Camera, Samsung WB100 because my Nikon SLR Camera was stolen a long time ago. I didn't use a tripod and I didn't use a flash either.

Inspiration

I always seek to capture those magical moments that I can visualize in the environment and when I saw a native fisherman casting his net just at sunset, with that fabulous landscape and the sun setting, I instantly imagined the scene of the fisherman trying to "fish / catch" the Sol con su Atarraya. "I was doing a private Nature and Landscape Photography Tour in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta all day photographing flora, fauna, passageways and ancient archaeological remains of the Tayrona Indians, then we made the descent through the river by boat until we reach the mouth of the Don Diego River that we normally make this journey in the afternoon to be arriving approximately 1 hour before starting at sunset precisely to take landscape photography. Almost when we were preparing everything to start the I return upriver by boat, in the distance I observed this native fisherman at that strategic point making his traditional fishing with Castilian and immediately in my mind I visualized the scene and told the boatman that I needed to get to that point and I quickly got off the boat and approached to try to capture the scene just at the moment when the man was throwing his net in the direction of where the sun was setting in the distance.

Editing

No. I like to capture natural colors. I only use a setting for white balance, highlights and shadows. I don't know how to use post-processing programs.

In my camera bag

Typically a Nikon D7100 Reflex Camera with an 18 - 140mm VR lens and a 70 - 300mm VR lens and a 50mm lens. I also always pack the Flash and a Polarizing filter.

Feedback

This place known as the Don Diego River, which descends from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta towards the Caribbean Sea, offers a captivating landscape beauty, to the point that it has been chosen on many occasions for the filming of International and national Movies and Documentaries, as well same Television commercials. When someone asks me for an excellent place or for Nature Photography I always recommend this magical place because it offers you a large number of elements at the level of fauna, flora, landscape and some opposites where the light gives you a wide range of possibilities to achieve some captivating photos. I recommend allocating one or two days for this site and being well prepared with all the necessary equipment but above all having a lot of patience and really like outdoor activities because you will be exposed to the strong Caribbean sun for which your protection should not be lacking. in terms of adequate clothing and good repellent against mosquitoes. Good hydration and have snacks although in the sector you can supply in the local community. As for the recommended hours for photography, it also depends on the atmospheric conditions, but the wonderful thing about the site is that it offers you an incredible passage either in the morning, afternoon or at sunset.
