I captured this photo on the west side of Badlands National Park. I arrived in the area about three hours before sunset and spent an hour hiking up and down the hills searching for the right vantage point. After having found a satifactory location, I settled in to watch the incredible kaleidoscope of color and texture as the sun's light softly settled over the rugged, painted horizon. Badlands National Park is not very large in terms of square miles, but it contains some of the most unique and beautiful rock formations and erosive forces in the country. It is definitely worth the trip and can be combined with Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial.
