Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Animas Forks, Colorado. This old mining cabin is deep in the mountains between Silverton, Ouray, and Lake City.

Time

I was on a 3 day four wheeling trip across the passes in the San Juan Mountains. It had been snowing and raining most of the day, but when i descended California pass into Animas Forks, the weather and fall time presented a perfect opportunity to get this shot with an interesting sky, and no people in the shot. This was on September 24, at 4:30 pm.

Lighting

The Colorado Mountains can experience fast and dramatic weather changes, especially in fall and spring. If you're willing to tolerate getting snowed on, rained on, and half blown off the mountain, sometimes the perfect lighting can emerge from the clouds. This is one of those times. After thinking it was just going to be a dreary evening, the sun emerged with the great contrast for maintaining nice detail on the cabin while illuminating the peaks, clouds, and fall colors.

Equipment

This was captured with a Nikon D610 on a tripod using a Nikon 24 mm f/2.8. No flash or any other accessories.

Inspiration

I have always been in love with these mountains in Colorado. Almost like an obsession. I am also fascinated by the miners and pioneers who have lived in them in the past. Just the thought of being one of the first to see the San Juan Mountains is extremely exciting to me. So capturing the cabin with this kind of backdrop really captures that in the best way i ever have.

Editing

Yes, I use some custom made presets in lightroom. Generally softening the highlights, brightening the shadows some for details, intensifying the colors some, and the usual sharpening and noise reduction. My goal is always to make it look like it did when i was there. This one was very successful, and did not require much in post processing.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is pretty simple. My Nikon D610, a Nikon 50mm, Nikon 24mm, and a Nikon 70-100 Zoom. The 50 is the only lens i bought new. The others are used and I got a good deal. I have some filters for the 50mm, a tripod, some extra memory cards, lens cloths, etc. Nothing too special.

Feedback

You can't take the picture without being in the right place at the right time. I like to go on a camping/4x4 trip in my favorite mountains and try to capture how i am feeling out there. I want the image to convey the grandeur, the smells, the crispness of the air, and the dreams. It's a way of capturing the my passion for the mountains. Sure i can use the understanding of the mechanics of photography to take nice pictures of other stuff, but for me, conveying the deep impact that the mountains have on my life is why I love photography. I am self taught and the motivation is all based on sharing these things. So my advice is to focus your photography on your passion, and that will develop your goals, gear, and photographic style. Everyone has their own journey learning and their own passion; set it free, and chase it.
