Location
This photo is actually a composition. The background was shot at the Peles Castle, a place that is especially breathtaking, with its unique architecture and detailed rooms. After that, we had a shooting in the studio with the model and the dog. The rest was a lot of work and composition in Photoshop.Time
It wasn't important when I took the photo. Rather, it was more about the question if I would be allowed to take photos inside the castle, and if the photos I take come out well enough, considering I would have to take them in a hurry and not in the best lighting. Nevertheless, I managed to capture some interesting scenes, despite the big ISO.Lighting
In the castle, there is only natural light, so I was required to increase the ISO, knowing all too well that this would bring in a decent amount of noise into the final shot. In the studio, however, I was able to control the light as I wanted to, so that process ran smoothly.Equipment
Canon 7D Mark II and in studio Elinchrom lights. This is my setup mainly.Inspiration
A big source of inspiration for me are stories for children. I believe that deep down I am still a child. I also love animated movies, from which I also inspire myself a lot when shooting. Be it Cruella de Vil, Snow White, Cinderella, or even fantasy like Game of Thrones and Magic the Gathering, all of those inspire me (in various measures.)Editing
The composition is as follows: the background as you see it in the final photo, while Cruella and the dog were photographed at different times. I tried to recreate the story from 101 Dalmatians, story in which Cruella aims to steal the spots from the dogs. I hope I managed to convey the story through the composition. I am always careful when it comes to details, as I believe they play an important role in defining a photo. For example, some important details were the smoke coming from the pipe and the missing spots from the dog that show up on Cruella instead (bodypainted onto the model). In my camera bag
My equipment consists of my camera, various lenses, and studio lights, however I rarely take the lights with me outside.Feedback
Yes, preparation is key. The preparation process is more important than the photo itself. This photo took me two weeks of preparation, namely acquiring the fur coat, the pipe, finding someone that has a Dalmatian dog, and so much more. Thus, I can say that details matter the most in the final photo.
