Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my 3rd year of varsity, studio shoot in Pretoria South Africa. The brief was to capture a portrait that was completely different to the person's true likeness. The model is simple, the girl next door type. I knew I had to go hard. I took off my jacket, and a couple of things I was wearing, and gathered a few props from my locker. Put it on her, put her hair up and showed her what I wanted her face to look like. It was funny, because she is soft, we struggled in the beginning, but we managed and brought out a completely different side to her.

Time

This photo was taken midday, in a studio. It's one of my favourite photos because my model was comfortable with me, we had been joking around throughout the morning, I told her what I wanted from the shoot, she was excited

Lighting

I wanted the lighting to capture her, without being overly dramatic.

Equipment

I used a Nikon, with a 24- 70 lens. Studio lights flash, placed on a tripod and a reflector

Inspiration

Simple. Capture a completely different side to the model, but make it believable. I think I achieved that.

Editing

Yes. I usually work in camera raw and photoshop. I did my global adjustments in camera raw and cleaned it up in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Camera, a 50mm and something longer, like a 70- 300. I always have my reflector and a speedlight

Feedback

I think know what you want to get out of the shoot before hand. Visual references help alot! I think the most important thing is to make sure that the model is comfortable. I made her do silly faces, she had foil in her teeth. I had to convince her if would look amazing! She obliged because she trusted me.
