Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a wolf sanctuary in Andalucia, Spain. It was actually shot through a fence by getting a telephoto lens right up close to one of the gaps and then cropping down slightly..

Time

The image was taken in the early afternoon, but the light wasn't too harsh which is often the case in the Spanish sunshine.

Lighting

The softer light allowed the texture of the wolf's coat to show up really well. The exif data is 1/1000, f5.6 at ISO 400.

Equipment

Canon 70D, Canon 100-400L II, hand held. I was taking single shots rather than continuous as I sometimes find surprisingly you can miss THE crucial moment by firing a burst and then it happens right afterwards !

Inspiration

I went to the sanctuary with the intention of shooting the wolves and I wasn't disappointed. In this case this and another wolf started howling and so it was the perfect time to capture an "action" shot which always has more impact than something fairly static.

Editing

Warmed the shot up a bit to enhance the colour of the coat and added a vignette to draw the image in to the subject and add a little drama.

In my camera bag

Now I have Canon 90D and Canon 5D Mark IV bodies, Canon 100-400L II, Canon 24-105L II, Canon 17-40L and Canon 10-22 EFS. Canon 430EX speedlight. Oh and a Canon nifty fifty prime. Not all in the bag at one time !

Feedback

For wildlife always a good idea to shoot at the same level rather than a standing position for example, which gives the image more engagement. In this case I was crouched down to achieve that with creaking knees.
