The Red Arrows were performing at Edinburgh, Scotland.

Time

About 6pm

Lighting

The sky was very mixed that evening. I was pleased to get this shot against a dark area of sky which provided good contrast with the aircraft and smoke trails.

Equipment

Canon EOS 500D. Canon 100-400 lens at 400mm

Inspiration

The Red Arrows are a terrific display team.

Editing

Not too much - just to ensure good contrast.

In my camera bag

I carry two Canon bodies, with a 24-105 zoom and a 100-400 zoom which allows me to capture just about anything ! I may also have a 10-22 wide angle.

Feedback

The shot was taken by panning at 1/400 second - which keeps the aircraft sharp but the smoke trails somewhat blurred. Panning with a fairly heavy zoom at 400mm takes some practice and you can only learn by trying it. The shutter speed depends on the subject and maybe involves some trial and error.
