Location
The photo was taken in a studio that was converted from an old industrial wool store in Melbourne, Australia. It has huge windows and a wooden floor, perfect for natural light photography.Time
I think it was about 11am.Lighting
The orientation of the studio allows the light to shine in almost all day. The AM is more hard light, direct sun and it feathers off further into the afternoon.Equipment
Canon 5D mkIII and a 50mm lens. All natural light.Inspiration
I'm all about people and portraits, I wanted to take a series of portraits using window light only. The studio location was perfect for that. I have lots of other shots from this shoot.Editing
Yes but nothing too crazy. I made it black and white in Lightroom and played with the contrast. Then I cleaned up a couple of skin imperfections in Photoshop. In my camera bag
Canon 5D mkIII and a Canon 80D (the 80D I use mostly for video)... 50mm lens is my go-to lens but I often use a 24-70mm. I have 2 x canon speedlights that I trigger from a remote, a tripod... Oh, and a reflector.Feedback
The light in this shot was direct sunlight and pretty hard light. A lot of people will tell you that type of light is no good but ANY type of sunlight works for me, you just need to know how to manipulate it, screen it, enhance it. You can see the shadows are quite dramatic because of the hard light... This "film noir" style is fun to create, playing with shadows and light is what it's all about.
