Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at a now closed animal park that was called wild life oasis, I’m self taught and this was one of the first times I was able to take a photo of a butterfly so I took a lot of photos and this was one of the better ones. I had to use a macro lense to try and get the detail needed.

Time

This shot was taken at around 12pm when the park was fairy empty, I remember it being extremely quiet as most people were in the restaurant on the other side of the building and thus the butterflies and other insects were out and about the room providing good conditions to photograph them.

Lighting

The lighting was hard on this photo as the room had very strong fluorescent lights, I had to fiddle with iOS and aperture to try and reduce the over exposure and get the detail I wanted to show to shine through. I was proud of this image because the lighting was so challenging.

Equipment

This shot was take with a Cannon 350D, it’s a very old camera that I still use today though I do intend to upgrade once I can afford it. The only other equipment I used was an attachable macro lense to help with getting closer to the butterfly and get as much detail as possible.

Inspiration

I love photographing animals and I’ve always been fascinated by insects and butterflies so when I saw this little creature I felt inspired to take the shot, it took a few tries as I would move to quick or accidentally knock a leaf and scare the butterfly so I had to move slowly.

Editing

I don’t tend to use post processing on my photos and I didn’t use any on this one.

In my camera bag

Well I have my Cannon 350D body and my normal 55mm lense as well as a zoom lense, I have some filters and UV filters. I have a lense hood as well as my macro lense and spare batteries, I do have a tripod but I only really bring that if I’m doing landscape.

Feedback

For animal photography I’d recommend being very patient, move slow and quiet you may have to wait a while before you can take a decent shot. You will want a high shutter speed if you want to capture them in movement but patience is really the key.
