Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an animal facility in Lancaster called wildlife oasis, it has been since shut down which ai am glad for since the animals didn’t seem well cared for and stressed.

Time

It was around midday when I took this photo, it was a bit overcast and there weren’t many people around so I was able to get fairly close to the crane.

Lighting

I didn’t really have any control over the light in this shot since it was an outdoor location, I tried though to shoot it in a way to highlight the birds best features.

Equipment

This was shot on a canon 350D it’s a very old camera but still captures great shots, I used a standard lens but no other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I’ve always loved animals particularly birds, the gray crowned crane is one that I saw a lot at a wildlife sanctuary I used to frequent with my mum. At the time I was checking out wildlife areas near me that I could do some photography at and was recommended wildlife oasis, they had these two beautiful Gray Crowned Crane youngsters and I couldn’t resist taking some photos of them. Though that place is now shut down and the animals were rehomed to more appropriate facilities that can provide them better care, I remember but feeling sad that this place the conditions of the animals the stress they were displaying was heartbreaking.

Editing

I use very little post processing in my images, in this case the image was slightly cropped but nothing else was done to it.

In my camera bag

At the time when I took this I just had my Cannon 350D and some extra batteries but now I also carry a cannon 55mm lens as well as a macro lens, I like to travel as light as I can since I often have to move around a lot while taking animal photos.

Feedback

The key to wildlife photography is patients and timing, a lot of the time you have to sit and wait for the shot you want to capture and when you see it you take it. With this I moved quietly as not to spook the bird and waited for awhile, it eventually got curious and came a bit closer and that’s when I managed to take the shot. An animal won’t just give you a great pose to start with you have to be ready to take the shot as soon as you see it.
