Behind The Lens

Location

You can find this spot in the center of the Hague, Netherlands. The medieval buildings are still in use by the Dutch government. The small tower on the left is still the official office of the dutch Prime Minister.

Time

The clock at the end of the pond reads 10.30 PM

Lighting

It was dark and the buildings were lit extremely bright, so yeah, that was a big challenge.

Equipment

For this picture I used my Nikon D7100 and a Tokina 11-16mm 2.8. The tripod enabled a longer shuttertime.

Inspiration

We were on a trip with my photoclub. When the others were partying a friend photographer and I headed back to the scene we saw in the afternoon. We reckoned it would be like this and we got rewarded.

Editing

The photo consists of 3 exposures (exposed for shadows, highlights and midtones). This was necessary due to the enormous contrasts caused by the extremely bright lights in the pond. I blended the exposures with the use of luminoscity masks. I almost never use HDR. The blending technique gives much cleaner results.

In my camera bag

I try to travel as light as possible. The bag itself is a sturdy thinktank. In it are normally the D7100 with a nikkor 17-55mm 2,8. Special lenses like the Tokina 11-16 2.8, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 or the Sigma 150-600 are only in the bag when they might be needed. Traveling light is the mantra.

Feedback

Bring a tripod if possible and shoot early or late. In those conditions you can make a difference. These buildings are photographed to death. Shooting mid day out of your hand gives you pictures any tourists produces with a cellphone. That was not the purpose of buying expensive gear.
