On one of my hikes in the desert on the Eastern Sierra slopes I came upon this old, ox drawn wagon. It is slowly returning to the dust against the backdrop of the High Sierra Nevada Mountains. Why was the wagon abandoned? Did the party finally make it to it's destination? Did the wagon break under the weight of it's cargo? These and many other questions go unanswered as the Sierra Nevada Mountains claimed many pioneers during the gold rush years starting in 1849. Some 300,000 gold-seekers to California, ushering in an era of lawlessness, racism and genocide against the native inhabitants. Do these wagon remnants have a story to tell?
