Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo in Chiang Mai Thailand. We were visiting a village of the Karen people who were very friendly, the girl agreed to pose for a photo.

Time

This shot was taken in the afternoon, no other light used other than natural light,

Lighting

i was looking for a darker background so that the girl would pop out when put in black and white.

Equipment

This was taken with a Sony Alpha 500

Inspiration

I was taken by the neck rings that the lady wore. This is a real tradition of the 'long neck people, or the karen people giving them a unique appearance.

Editing

I generally shoot in color then use lightroom covert to black and white and do some work on contrast and light.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel very light, maybe two lenses, a 35mm and 50mm. This makes you think about the shot you want to take.

Feedback

I like to build a rapport with people before I take their photo if its posed. Then ask them to act naturally for the photo so that its not over posed. i actually prefer candid shots, but there are times when you just need to ask can I take your portrait. When you have taken some shots and show them, they are generally impressed.
