Location
This shot was taken in Kowloon Hong Kong. I am fortunate to work in Asia and travel extensively through the region. I always have a camera in my bag and when I see an opportunity, grab it.Time
This was taken in the afternoon with very bright sunlight. It was an opportunist photo where I was walking under the structure for some shade and saw the person walking in front. I could see the image in my mind before I took it. I am more of an opportunist photographer than planning shots, which adds more excitement when you come across those situations.Lighting
The midday sun was very bright so it gave a great contrast, I didn’t need to think long about the shot I wanted to achieve.Equipment
This was was taken with a Sony Alpha 500 a few years ago whenI was just starting out in the street photography genre. I now carry a canon 5D mark iii with a 35mm prime lens when walking the streets with a handgrip. Depending on the situation or shot I’m looking for I may also shoot from the hip to capture more candid shots.Inspiration
It was just one of those scenes you come across when walking through cities and around architecture that creates the perfect frame. In the words of Henri Cartier-Bresson, it was one of those ‘decisive moments’ that you come across and the instinct to take the photo kicks in.Editing
I use lightroom predominantly to convert the images into black and white and then work on lighting and contrast to bring more drama to the image. I try not to over process and avoid as much as possible from cropping, preferring to capture the image in the frame of the camera. In my camera bag
The lighter the better. Canon 5D markiii with either a 35 or 50mm prime lens with handgrip set to AV mode so that it’s quick to adjust when those fleeting moments pass in front of you. I will even defer to the iPhonex if I am moving between meetings or sitting in the back of a car on a rainy day, that can also produce brilliant photo opportunities.Feedback
The city of Hong Kong is so diverse, from the crowded Hong Kong Island with its skyscrapers and architecture to the mountains of lama island and coast of Stanley. One of my favourite cities to spend a few days exploring and taking photos. I will visit the same places frequently as depending on the light and time of day, you get a different perspective each time.
