Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while traveling the iconic valley in the US. It was taken in Monument Valley / Utah. It was a very long trip rewarded with beautiful views. Each mile gave a new opportunity to take another spectacular shot.

Time

It was afternoon about 3 pm, the sun was quite high and behind me. I was driving all day and when I saw this straight road with yellow road line I knew that it is a perfect moment for it.

Lighting

It was April but the day was very hot. Light was soft without clouds, and visibility was perfect.

Equipment

I used Nikon D80 with Sigma 10-20. I took it lying on my back on the asphalt - my body was my tripod :) and I used half-grey filter.

Inspiration

I was trying to show the well-known and iconic views a little bit different. I was looking for a very long and straight part of road. Very important was the yellow line - one nice single line with the horizon and mountains in the end.

Editing

No, only crop the sky in photo a little bit. I always take photo in manual mode, so I try to make maximum when I take photo (cropping, light, DoF)

In my camera bag

I still use Nikon body, but now it's D7100. It is very nice camera with great possibilities. I have lens Sigma 50 mm 1.4 Art - it's amazing lens, super sharp and fast. I have sigma 10-20 / 3.5. I use filters half-grey, grey and ND - Hi Tech system and Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

:) there are a lot of places with nice road, so it is an easy part of take this kind of photo. What is important is to capture end of road and the road quality. In my case the road was not perfect (with little "screeches") but made of colorful stones. Important is vertical and horizontal symmetry. And probably as primary element your safety - you are staying or lying on the road taking a photo, please ask other person to take care of your back.
