Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the island of St. Croix just outside of Christiansted

Time

It was just after 6:00 a.m. when I took this photo

Lighting

I didn't want the rising sun to wash out the photo so I took a bracketed set of five photos and merged them together to make sure the lighting was the way I wanted it on the sky and the shore.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D4s and a nikon 16-35mm f4 lens on a tripod

Inspiration

I have always been drawn to sunsets and sunrises because of the textures and colors. I made it a point to get up early every day while on St. Croix just to find the sunrise that I wanted.

Editing

Other than merging the five bracketed shots together in photoshop CS5 this photo is pretty much as it was taken.

In my camera bag

I'm an eclectic shooter, taking landscapes, macros and underwater photos so I carry a lot of gear with me. All of my camera gear is made by Nikon and I usually carry at least two camera bodies (a D4s and one of my D800s), 5-6 lens from a 16mm fisheye up to a 200-500mm f5.6, a tripod and a monopod and a set of ND filters. I also carry an Ikelite housing and two strobes for the D800 so that I can take underwater photos and I keep a Gopro Hero 4 in my bag to shoot underwater video.

Feedback

I think the hardest thing about shooting a sunrise is getting out of bed! The next step is to find that spot that has the textures in it that will make the shot more interesting and then it's all about mother nature and what kind of sunrise she decides to show you. I have spent lots and lots of mornings and evenings watching sunrises and sunsets waiting for just the right shot. It's not a bad way to spend an hour or two!
