Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken off the Island of Maui, Hawaii where I live.

Time

I took this photo about 10:00 a.m.

Lighting

The lighting wasn't ideal for the shot but catching a breaching whale in perfect light isn't the easiest thing to do.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D4s and a Nikon 80-400mm lens.

Inspiration

I am always trying to get breaching whale shots and during the season I am on a boat at least once a week looking for "that" shot.

Editing

This is an as shot photo. No post processing was done except to convert it from a RAW file to a jpeg.

In my camera bag

My bag changes every time I go out, depending on what I am shooting. I switch between a Nikon D4s and a Nikon D800 camera body and I have a wide array of lenses from a fisheye up to a 500mm. My go to lens for landscapes is the Nikon 24-120 f4. I also use the Nikon 16-35 f4 lens quite a bit for landscapes and astrophotography.

Feedback

If you are trying to capture breaching whales the best thing you can have is a camera that shoots fast, at least 7 frames per second and even faster if possible. I shoot with auto ISO when shooting whales with a minimum shutter speed of 1/1000. The rest is up to the whales!
