Location
This photo was taken at Paunau Beach Park on MauiTime
The photo was taken just a few minutes before sunset which on Maui is right around 6:00 p.m.Lighting
The lighting was supplied by nature but I did use a graduated ND filter to block out a little of the light across the top half of the photo.Equipment
This was shot using a Nikon D800 and Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 lens on a tripod with a .9 graduated ND filter.Inspiration
I was inspired by the island itself. You can't hardly beat a Hawaiian sunset and this one happened to be more spectacular than usual.Editing
I always do some post processing. I always shoot in RAW (or NEF) and make slight adjustments in the RAW converter in Photoshop CS5. I also you the NIK software by Google to tweak the contrast some.In my camera bag
When traveling to Hawaii I always have two camera bodies, a couple of different wide angle lenses including a Nikon 14-24mm f 2.8 and either a 16-35mm f4 or the 17-35mm f 2.8. I also use a Nikon 16mm fisheye on occasion and I have a couple of different zooms including a Nikon 28-300mm variable, a Nikon 200-500mm f 5.6 and a Nikon 24-120mm f4. I always travel with a tripod and ball head and my ND filters.Feedback
An old photographer once said when somebody asked him how he got his shots "f8 and be there". Being there is the biggest thing. To get the really great shots you just have to keep going back over and over until you get "that" shot. It may take twice or it may take 200 times. For me, when I shoot a landscape it's all about the skies. If you don't have the right clouds for the texture it's just not going to be a great shot.
