Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lake Misurina in the Italian Dolomites just north of Venice. I took a lot of photos of the area with my tripod however this one is my favourite and I didn't even use the tripod. I had to carefully hold the camera down just above the water to face the reeds in the foreground. I would not of achieved this shot otherwise.

Time

My partner and I hired a car to travel around the Dolomites and stumbled upon this beautiful spot late in the day. I love how in European summers you have so many hours of daylight to use. This is coming from Australia where we don't get the long summer daylight.

Lighting

We arrived at the lake at one of the best times of day. The water was perfectly still and the mountains were glowing from the afternoon sun. The contrast of darker forest and reeds with the glowing mountains creates an interesting scene I think. I wanted the viewer to feel drawn to the mountains in the distance.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 with an Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 pro lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

When I arrived at Lake Misurina it felt like I was looking at an edited photograph - yet there it was in front of me. The leading lines, the reflections, the glowing mountains all came together in my head as a great image so I had to take a photo. I am still on a learning journey with my photography, and traveling the world is my way of improving. I spent 4 weeks in Italy and of that time I only spent 2 days up in the Italian Dolomites. Looking back I wish I had spent more of my time exploring the beauty of the mountains - but that can be for next time.

Editing

I have uploaded the unedited version of this photo onto Viewbug if anyone is interested in a comparison. Not too much post-processing was necessary though. I used Lightroom to add some contrast, a little bit of sharpening and bring the shadows up.

In my camera bag

I have quite a small kit as I only bring necessities due to backpacking. In my bag I have the Olympus OM-D E-M1, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 pro lens, Olympus 60mm f/2.8 macro lens, Olympus 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 (a cheap telephoto lens which I don't use too often) and a travel tripod. I also have a polarising filter for the 12-40mm lens which basically stays glued to the camera. I will be adding some prime lenses to my kit in the future.

Feedback

I was extremely lucky with timing when I arrived at Lake Misurina, as the lighting was perfect. But the general rule for great mountain/lake photography is to aim for early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sometimes you may get unlucky and the weather won't be perfect but try to take advantage of what you're seeing in front of you. Just because it's cloudy doesn't mean you can't take a great photo! May through early September is probably the best time of year for shots like this in the Dolomites. Photography, like any artistic endeavour, is a constant learning experience. The more you get out there and do it, the more you will improve.
