Location
This photo was captured up in the coastal fiords of British Columbia. I booked the trip with a tour company based on the Northern end of Vancouver Island, BC, and travelled by boat to reach the estuary.Time
This photo was captured around late morning in early September. The salmon were spawning, and there was lots of fishing going on in the estuary.Lighting
Lighting was compliments of Mother Nature. There was a bit of light cloud cover that helped to soften the mid-day sun, but for the most part it was a work with what I'd been given kind of shoot.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon D4 and Sigma's 50-500 mm telephoto zoom lens. We were shooting from a small skiff with tight quarters, so a monopod wasn't practical to use.Inspiration
This particular day with the brown bears was pure magic. There was a wide range behaviors to watch and photograph. The bears provided the inspiration, I just tried to document and stay true to what I was observing.Editing
I shoot in RAW, and post process with a combination of Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC and MacPhun's suite of software. This photo was processed with Lightroom and MacPhun's Noiseless CK and Intensify CK plug-ins for Photoshop. In my camera bag
My goto equipment for wildlife photography includes my Nikon D4 paired with either my Sigma 50-500 mm or 150-600 mm Sport lens. For landscape work I use a Nikon D810 with either a Nikkor 16-35 mm or Nikkor 28-300 mm lens, depending on the scene I'm shooting.Feedback
I shoot in burst mode with as high of shutter speed as I can pull off with the available light in order to freeze the action and capture sharp images.
