Location
This photo was taken at my local beach break in San Clemente California. It was December 25th, Christmas Day.Time
This was around 8:00 in the morning. Not a cloud in the sky. Perfect light for capturing a surfer riding a "right". San Clemente Is a south west facing beach on the Southern California coast USA.Lighting
Early front lighting is optimal for clear and bright surfing shots. Shutter speeds will be high and freeze the action well. With the smooth "glassy" conditions the sun reflects off the water too. Great for getting the shot but very bright in the surfer's eyes! Or the lens if you're pointed into it.Equipment
Shot with my Canon 7D, RAW, Canon 10-22 lens. SPL water/splash housing. That's my camera. Other equipment was a full wetsuit and a pair of UDT Duckfeet fins.Inspiration
I couldn't think of anything I'd rather do with the conditions the way they were. It was a beautiful morning with good surf. That's what inspired me!Editing
Converted the RAW file and did a couple of minor edits in Lr.In my camera bag
The same Canon 7D for the last 7 years. Canon 10-22, Canon 100-400, Canon 50 1.4.Feedback
1st and foremost you must be a good to great swimmer with good to expert level wave knowledge. Never under estimate the ocean. Always wear fins. Helmets are a good idea. There are many options available for shooting in the water. I want the best image quality I can get. That's why I use a dslr in a water housing. It's very expensive though. And heavy! A good option to look into would be the GoPro System. The new ones are pretty darn good for much less money.
