Location
Sunny Southern California. Specifically San Onofre State Surfing Beach. It is also the cover photo for my book "Sano On My Mind". http://www.blurb.com/b/8104441-sano-on-my-mindTime
Here on the West Coast of the USA this would be the sunset. So around sunset time.Lighting
Late afternoon light. What else can you say. It's warm, golden and soft!Equipment
Canon 7D and a Canon 100-400L push/pull version. Hand held. I took several different comps of this scene.Inspiration
Well I have always been inspired by the poster of the movie "The Endless Summer" by Bruce Brown. I saw it, for the 1st time, when I was about 9 years old. The movie poster is a kind of graphic silhouette of surfers carrying boards in the foreground of a sunset. I'd have to think almost everyone has seen it before.Editing
Not much. Shot it in Raw converted it to a 16 bit tif in DPP. Then converted it into a jpg in my old version of Lightroom. A little exposure, highlight and shadow adjustment. Just boosting the DR really to more like my eye was seeing. In my camera bag
Oh I have a 5D IV paired up with a 16-35 2.8L III. Ridiculously expensive but what I always wanted in a camera. Just a beautiful photographic instrument! Haven't touched my old trusty 7D since getting the 5D.Feedback
Sure. Try out different focal lengths. Also shoot hand held and take advantage of camera or lens stabilization. The different angles and levels you can get hand held sometimes will get that extra cool shot you are looking for! And if something seems to be in the way of your shot, use it as a subject in the shot! Why not? This surfboard sticking out of the back of a truck backed in the parking lot was kind of in the way of the sunset. It was then I realized it was more than perfect in the shot!
