Location
This photograph was taken at Bradgate Park, a public park in Charnwood Forest, in Leicestershire, England. It covers 850 acres. This was my first visit to the Park and it was very very foggy when I arrived. I had no idea of the layout of the park and so I headed up a hill, through bracken and rather wild terrain. I later found out that most people there to take photographs and see the deer headed in the opposite direction! I thought it was quiet for a public park at the weekend!Time
My visit was in late september and I had left home very early in the fog to travel, hoping the sun would break through. I arrived around 7.00am, and the photo was taken at 8.07, the sun was very low and the fog was moving in patches, so I was lucky to get this image in between the fog.Lighting
I had hidden in the bracken, and was wrapped up as it was cold in the fog, but I could see that when the fog moved, the sun was just catching the bracken. This position allowed the sun to catch the antlers, although it would have been easier if the Deer had been walking in the opposite direction!Equipment
I had a Canon 5D MKIII with a 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM with a 2x mk III. With this equipment I can move around, but all shots need a tripod!Inspiration
I had wanted to photograph deer for a long time having bumped into some wild deer, without a camera a few years ago and being mesmerised. We had moved house and location for family reasons and I knew I was now only an hour away from Bradgate park. I had seen several images from other photographers taken at the park so I was excited to plan a day I could go and spend some time at the location. It was others images which inspired me.Editing
The post processing issues were mainly about the shadow and the haze/fog. I used lightroom, and the dehaze control was a great help, I also adjusted the white balance and the shadow. In my camera bag
Canon 5D MKIII with a 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM with a 2x mk III. Solid tripod. For landscape shots I also carry an EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, I also carry spare batteries!Feedback
Check the weather, understand the layout of the location, understand the wildlife, wrap up warm and be very patient!
