Excelsior is a conceptual composite I made with the intent of having both a realistic and allegorical feel, therefore it is intentionally left open to several interpretations. I’ve learned that the viewer’s response to the image varied greatly depending on their personal outlook of life. People with a more negative approach responded accordingly and concluded the scenario was somewhat scary and overwhelming, especially with such a young child alone in the water and surrounded by so many birds. Parents of little children often took a more realistic approach and found it to be a precious and sentimental moment, whilst others interpreted it to be a deep and profound image full of hidden meaning. I personally prefer the latter and view it as a visual representation of stepping from this life to the next- the birds an earthly portrayal of a flurried but gentle angelic escort towards the light; the youth and innocence of a child representing our inadequacy and humility in front Deity himself- head bowed in reverence while surrounded by Glory- hence the title, which also pays homage to Longfellow’s legendary poem.

The birds that do not suit with the direction of Light are a distraction, but nice creativity.

good work, but shouldnt your shadow be more distorted in the water than looking so flat?
