I took this picture at the iSimangaliso reserve in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. We always enjoy an amazing day at the beach in this place and catch an even better sunset on our way out of the park.Time
This is at sunset, we were chasing the sun trying to catch the best spot with the best light.Lighting
I love catching the moments just as the sun begins to kiss the horizon to when it dips below. The colours are always so vivid and they change so quickly. Two shots taken only a minute or two apart give totally different results.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 650D with a 55-250mm lens leaning out the open window of our car.Inspiration
I have learned that the best sunsets shots are taken in silhouette. I loved the look of this tree, standing on its own so clearly shaped by the prevailing winds of the environment. It feels like it is in motion even though the evening was totally calm.Editing
I don't do much if any post-processing, I may adjust the levels slightly but most of the time I leave things alone. In my camera bag
I always have my three standard lenses, the thrifty fifty, the 55-250mm, and the 75-300mm. I'm still learning a lot about photography but I'm finding these three are serving me very well.Feedback
South Africa is one of the most photogenic places I've been. The natural beauty there is astounding and it has been fun trying to do it justice through my camera. A wide open space that allows you to capture the expanse of the sky and the range of colours in the sunset helps a lot, and objects to create the silhouette create the contrast to make the colours pop. Have fun experimenting with different moments during the sunset or trying to capture different silhouettes, birds flying etc. It is amazing what you might end up with!
