I took the photo on a casual day out on BOX Hill in Surrey, UK. My intention was to take pics of the dramatic scenery!Time
I took the pic around lunch time, we had no long arrived and I had a few moments to play with my camera before the family were all ready for our walk.Lighting
The car park we were in was mostly in the shade, given by all the trees that grow around the area, apart from the small section I had parked in (luckily it turns out!) and the sun was high in the sky, shining down onto my car.Equipment
I had my trusty Nikon D200 and I was just fitting my circular polarizing filter to the Nikon 18-70 1.3.5-4.5G ED lens.Inspiration
I had originally planned just to have a trip to capture some of the amazing scenery and flora and fawner that is around Box Hill and take the family on a nice walk. I grew up on Box Hill as my father was the head ranger, so this this was really a trip to show my family where I grew up. As I was getting my camera ready and everyone was getting ready for the walk, I noticed my daughter leaning on the front of the car and the lighting showed her reflection up perfectly. I asked her to lay back on the bonnet and started telling her stupid jokes while snapping away, here is the result!Editing
I used very little post processing on this shot, which is unusual for me. I did play with the image and have about 6 versions, none I was really happy with. I was going to play with it again, once taking the colour out of the image, but when I looked at it, I was happy with it as it was, which shocked me, but it worked as it was.In my camera bag
Where do I start? For a start I usually carry 2 bags, as one is just never enough! I always take my trusty Nikon D200 (it does everything I need and more), Nikkor 18-70 lens, Nikon 70-300 lens, macro lens ring light/flash, circular polarizing and UV filters, 5 batteries and 3 memory cards and that's just in my holster bag! In the other bag I carry a couple of flash guns, halo light, every type of Cokin type filters that you can think of, including home made effects, variety of circular filters, flash gun mounts, various lens hoods, shutter release cable, charger and data cables and probably a dozen other things that I may only ever use once, but hey, I'd rather have it with me just in case, than find I need it and have left it at home!Feedback
I tend to look at not just at the subject, but what there is that will frame the subject, or enhance it. Reflections are a great tool to use to enhance your subject and they happen everywhere. Here I've used the bonnet of my car, but just keep your eyes open. We all know about water and glass, but have you ever noticed how black coffee perfectly reflects lips? It's about playing with angles too, find a puddle on a sunny day and walking around it, varying the distance and see what it reflects. My golden rule, take loads of pictures, from various angles, think outside the box and about all have fun with it!
