Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Ramat-Gan Safari in Israel, which is home to the largest collection of animals in the Middle East. Arranged as a 250 acre African Safari Park, unique in the world as the African animals who live here are able to roam around the park, and visitors are able to have an African safari experience, just minutes from the center of downtown Tel Aviv.

Time

Morning, at about 9am, after the pack has finished their feeding.

Lighting

low sun light was amazing in that December morning and clouds gave the perfect distribution of light, like a huge softbox in the sky.

Equipment

I used my (now old) Canon 400D camera to 1/320 @ f/5.6 and ISO 100 to get a sharp picture along with the beautiful green shallow background that I imagined was her throne as she looked down to watch over her pride.

Inspiration

The family of lions in the safari is the biggest attraction, so I watched as these incredible lions were relaxing just after their feeding, then I saw the female relaxing (almost sleeping) in the high grass watching over all the others.

Editing

Just a small amount of level correction in Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I now walk around with a Canon 7D and the 24-105 f/4 L I also have in my bag the 10-22mm, the 75-300mm and the 100mm Macro .

Feedback

As you know it takes patience and a lot of luck in wildlife photography, and I felt so lucky to be at that moment to capture these majestic creatures. To capture these kind of images you should do your homework and know when the animals are active during the day, when they are being fed, what are their habits and so on.. Also be very patient, but alert - you can never know when a perfect moment will present itself, think of your composition beforehand and measure the light for the best exposure.
