Behind The Lens
Location
This shot was taken at the biggest and only open Safari in the middle east, the Rama-Gan Safari, where lions roam in their own area and can be protected from other humans. Because of that, the Safari allows for the pride to act as if they were truly in an open space and the interactions between the lions are real. I loved seeing those interactions and especially the feelings of love and attraction between the male lion and the lioness captured here. You would not believe the largest city in Israel is right behind them, only 20 minutes away.Time
It is just after their feeding, the lions are relaxed and bathing in the sun. A perfect time to get back to a family affair.Lighting
Natural lighting only was used here as the sun was setting down in the sky and there was still enough light to capture the shot without any use of external lighting features.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D camera and a 24-105L lens at F.4 to create a blur of the background and focus on the emotions conveyed in the image. No tripod or other equipment was used.Inspiration
The almost-human affection between the two animals inspired me, I was following them all day and it was clear they cared for each other. I am not used to seeing wild animals act in such a way and that's why the image is very special to me.Editing
A small number of shadows and highlights adjustment in Adobe Lightroom was used to bring out the colors. In my camera bag
I find that in photography trips I like to travel light and so my versatile 24-105mm lens over my canon 7D crop factor sensor does the job perfectly for any situation I may find.Feedback
Be patient! It took over 4 hours to capture this one shot, and I took over 700 pictures that day so I recommend that you enjoy the process.
