While driving through central Mexico with my photography class I was able to capture a couple images while we ate lunch. This image provides a unique perspective up through the "limbs" of a huge tree like cactus.

Totally awesome! I'm curious how many times you got stabbed by thorns getting in there.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken roadside between Mexico City and Oaxaca.

Time

Middle of the day with full sun.

Lighting

Natural light, shot hand held. Next time with the ability to stay I would love to shoot a long exposure at night and light the cactus with flash.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 7D with a Sigma 10-20mm lens.

Inspiration

This type of cactus, pachycereus weberi, grows like a tree. It has a main base that supports everything with a cluster of arms and diverting limbs growing out of the top. I thought it was an interesting vantage point to stand under the giant cactus. It gave a feeling that the photo was taken from within the ground.

Editing

Very minimal post-processing, just a little levels adjustment and some sharpening.

In my camera bag

My backpack usually has a canon body, two lenses (sigma 10-20mm and tamron 18-270), tripod, canon 580exII flash, and radio popper transmitter/reciever. That is the standard full load but for travelling light I will just bring the body and both lenses.

Feedback

Always work your angles when shooting, regardless of the subject. I have other great shots of this truly impressive and giant cactus but this specific angle caught my attention. Gaining a fresh and interesting perspective can lead to photos that really impact the viewer and make them stop and analyze the image longer.
