Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of a Wood Duck at the WIldlife park located near Phoenix Arizona. They have several ponds loaded with waterfowl. It's a place with many photography opportunities.

Time

It was early morning around 8 AM when I took this photo. The animals and people were still very quiet. The time of day I love to take photos.

Lighting

I prefer natural lighting, especially near sunrise and sunset when the colors are not washed out because of the sun's brightness.

Equipment

The sun just rose over the horizon, giving the reflection of the water in general golden color. This made the colors of the Wood duck pop and blend well into the background.

Inspiration

I am a wildlife photographer at heart. I look for natural colors in this world, especially those occurring in wildlife.

Editing

I did crop this photo to isolate this specific bird and its reflection. I didn't want any distractions. Getting that detail of a reflectiion with little distortion from water movement is rare.

In my camera bag

I normally do not carry a bag, unless I am going for an extended stay, I normally carry a camera and lens, sometimes a tripod, lens cleaner, and a spare battery. Part of the fun is figuring out ways to take the photo want with the equipment you have with you. Carrying too much equipment I find a camera bag restricts my movements to get the wildlife photo I want and often you don't get a second opportunity.

Feedback

Research what is the right place at the right time for the photo you want to capture. Be at that place before that time and take some practice shots fine-tuning your equipment's settings. Experiment with some of those settings prior to the golden opportunity occurs.
