Behind The Lens

Location

Havasupai trail (Grand Canyon) first of four waterfalls.

Time

It was about 6 AM in the morning. Sunrise started around 5:30 in the morning.

Lighting

There were dark shadows in some areas and blazing sun in other areas because of the early morning. Being part of the Grand Canyon the lighting was changing dramatically every few minutes.

Equipment

A full backpack... tripod and monopod, five lenses (Macro thru 600mm zoom lens), two cameras Canon 60D and 80D, two flashes, cleaning kit, extra batteries, memory cards. Over 60 LBS of equipment carried for three days (30+ miles) moderate to difficult hike.

Inspiration

Are you kidding me? This is a photographer's dream photoshoot outing. I have never seen a more beautiful part of the country and probably never will. I spent three days on the trails and I could have spent 3 months. My daughter and I had the trip of a lifetime.

Editing

This is panoramic, stitched three separate photos together, had a lot of painful lighting issues dealing with dark shadows and VERY bright Arizona sunlight. MANY hours, maybe days of post-processing. Do and undo, start from scratch, throw it away and start over again.

In my camera bag

I usually pack my car full, 90% of my equipment goes with me. I don't decide what goes in the backpack until I am onsite. anything more than 60 lbs I got to rent a mule. If there is any chance I might need it, it goes in the backpack. I hate getting onsite and finding I need something.

Feedback

Plan your shots ahead. Practice taking shots with cameras and lens in different lighting. Know your camera's and lens limitations. Practice post-processing difficult lighting shots, HDR, stitching photos together, etc... On-site take photos... review them, make some changes, take more photos, repeat again and again until you are confident you got that one kill shot you have traveled so far to get. Fill those memory cards. They are relatively cheap. You may never get a second chance to take that one photo, don't leave without it.
