Location
This photo was taken on a trip to Bolivia. Near the town of Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat. Because of the white color, a shallow layer of water turns it into a giant mirror.Time
This was the end of a full day of exploring and our last stop before returning to town. This is about an hour before sunset. The other people in the Jeep were about ready to pack it in for the day, but they kindly put up with me shooting into dusk.Lighting
I can only credit nature itself for the lighting on this one.Equipment
This was shot handheld on a Canon Rebel T6i with a 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 wide angle lens.Inspiration
When I started planning my trip to Bolivia, I prioritized a visit to this location based on amazing things I had heard from others.I was out snapping all types of reflections from the surrounding environment, when I turned around and saw how the Jeep was reflecting too - it was the perfect object to bring in a sense of scale and also a nod to the adventure and remoteness.Editing
This picture was actually taken before I started shooting in RAW... just got lucky. Only a few minor edits to align the horizon and minor global adjustments for shadows and highlights. In my camera bag
If I'm going out specifically for birds, I'll have my T6i with the Sigma 150-600 contemporary. Otherwise I've got the Canon EF-S series to cover the range of focal lengths (10-18, 18-55, 55-250) that are everyday walk around. I have only recently started bringing a tripod with me too... Ultimately, I'm still pretty new to photography.Feedback
If you read about this place (Salar de Uyuni) there's a lot out there about how you have to plan out the right season to get the mirror effect, but even in the off-season the guides who take people out know where to find a suitable location if you ask. Also, you might want to give yourself a day of rest and recovery before going out and being active - the altitude is brutal.
