I was driving to a track meet my son was hurdling and long jumping so I had my camera so I could shoot his day. On the way there I was noticing as I got higher the rain turned to snow and it just put a dusting on everything. The black burnt trees and the dusting of snow just caught my attention. I took this image about 9:00 am, it was pretty chilly.Lighting
It was cloudy which actually worked better for black and white.Equipment

As I was driving up the mountain the trees were burned but the forest was thick enough that you really couldnt tell there was anything but black trunks. Then I crested the hill and this valley had a row of trees with a dusting of snow with a thousand black sticks hidden in a small brand new forest. The contrast stopped me in my tracks, I had to get some images.Editing
Yes. I shot 6 images total. One with as low as an aperture I could muster for detail. The second was a longer exposure to capture the burned trees. The third was a sweep upward on the tripod so the streaks stayed aligned. I did this twice and married the images in Photoshop.In my camera bag
I have 3 lenses I swap out. 50 mm lens for portraits or depth images, a 70-200mm for sports and animals in the distance. and finally a Nikon 55-300mm for images of speed. I use a tri-pod 90% of the time when I shoot landscapes or people. I use a unipod for wildlife and sports. It's a comfort issue for me. Im a tall guy so when I get on the ground I need it to be fast and stable.Feedback
I think the reason this image works for this effect is because of the 1/3 line the trees made with the black burned trees sticking up above the new growth. The long horizontal line was the reason this image works. If the horizon line had a bow or bend in it it just would not have worked as well. Luck is a big part of nature/landscape photography, catching a cloud that is helping with light or a car drives on an empty road and you catch the trailers form the lights. Finding the unusual and emphasize it.
