Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed this on my dining room table. The setup did not require a lot of space, so it worked out very well to shoot this at my home.

Time

I photographed this in the evening. It require that I had no other competing light source.

Lighting

I used one light source that was control with one silver reflector, two pieces of foam core. The color bokeh lighting was a combination of minature LED lights and reflective sparkly colored ornaments placed in various distances behind the truck to create more depth.

Equipment

I used a Sony AR7 mirrorless body with a 75mm Kinoptik C mount lens adapted to fit the AR7. This lens would of been used on a 16mm movie camera years ago. The Kinoptik 75mm lens produces a unique creamy bokeh. Light source was a BOLT TL-BT250 LED light, one silver reflector, two pieces of white foam core and a Manfrotto tripod. One set of battery operated tiny LED lights and sparkly reflective ornaments .

Inspiration

There is a growing popularity to use miniature vehicles in still life images which inspired me to give it a try. I wanted to use a vintage toy rather than a newer piece.

Editing

I use several editing tools. I import my RAW files to Lightroom and make a few adjustments. After that I am in Topaz Studio where I spend the most time post-processing. I end up with some finishing touches in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I shoot with a Nikon D850 and a Nikon D700 that has been converted to IR (infared). I have a large selection of Nikon ED AF and AF-S lenses as well as adapters to use older Canon FD mount manual focus lenses. I also use a Sony A7R mirrorless. I only use vintage C mount lenses with my Sony. My favorite C mount brands are Kinoptik, Angeniuex, Cooke, Wollensak and Birns & Sawyer Hollywood lenses. These lenses were designed for 16mm cine cameras. I use these lenses for the amazing creamy bokeh they create.

Feedback

You can do a lot with a single light and white foam core. Miniatures do not take up a lot of space, so you can setup almost anywhere. When possible I leave everything set up until I have viewed my images in Lightroom.
