During my visit unseasonal rains had made trees, shrubs and plants green and in bloom, but the water was long gone from this particular and iconic clay pan. I was told that all of this was under water for many days and looked otherworldly as the otherwise dry ground had become a mirror of the sky. Similar things occur on the salt pan of Bolivia - Salar de Uyuni.

I don't know the exact reason f or the death of the trees in the center of this clay pan, but very close by there were healthy and lush trees, one with a crow's nest with chicks in it.
