I took this photo on the top of Dodd Summit in the Lake District National Park, UKTime
I remember my son and I had made a late afternoon decision to head up Dodd Summit for the first time to see what photos we could take. It was for the adventure more than anything that we headed out. We arrived at the top at around 18:30 and I took this photo about half an hour later. I spent some time taking in the views and looking for compositions.Lighting
We timed it quite well as we were in time for golden hour while at the top of Dodd Summit. The weather on the day though was constantly changing and quickly. On the way up we were fairly sheltered not realising just how strong the winds were. At the top however it was very windy and the light was amazing, it was just a matter of timing it right. I set up my composition and waited for the sunlight to come through the clouds lighting up the side of the fells.Equipment
A tripod was a must for this one, and I even found I needed to shelter my tripod from the wind a little to reduce any unwanted camera shake or it falling over. The camera I used was a Nikon D750 with a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 lens attached. I also used Lee Filters to balance the exposure of the image. This ended up being a 6 sec exposure at f/16.Inspiration
My family and I recently moved to the Lake District (well it was about 6 months ago now) and we absolutely love the place. It is full of inspiration from fellow photographers, writers, explorers, artists and not to mention the amazing scenery all around. It is hard not to feel inspired living in a place like this. That being said I am inspired by my family and I wanting to explore the area on Our Lake District Adventure, and trying to capture it on the way.Editing
Yes, like many of my images I post processed this image in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I used the applications to perform basic edits on the exposure and to make the colours pop a little more. As you can see in the image it almost looks like it was two different days with the dark sky and mood in the background but amazing light on the foreground. It was such an amazing sight to witness and I tried to capture that as best I could. In my camera bag
As a photographer who loves everything outdoors, landscapes, nature, wildlife, macro, I tend to carry equipment to make sure I am ready for any subject. So my bag will usually contain my Nikon D750 camera along with a selection of lenses, Nikon 16-35mm f4, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon 105mm Micro f2.8, Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-f5.6. I also use a variety of Lee Filters including Hard and Medium Grad Filters, Circular Polariser, 3 and 6 stop ND filters and Reverse Grad. Oh and it goes without saying that I would carry a tripod with me, especially when out on a Landscape/Macro shoot.Feedback
What this image does not show you was how harsh the wind and weather conditions actually were. I only captured a moment in time here and I waited for the right moment to take the image. I could have been put off by the weather, particularly when you could see a band of heavy rain heading our way, but sticking with it paid off. So my advice is don't leave a location too early. Keep an eye on the weather and how it is changing, that amazing light you are after might just appear.
