Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a pathetically unassuming corner of a local park in Utah. Which just proves, it really doesn't matter where the photo is taken as long as it's done with pure passion and intent.

Time

Because of time restrictions on both myself and my client, this photo was taken at the worst possible time of day with the sun high in the sky. Another example of how you can get around obstacles if you have the desire to make it work...the right equipment helps as well.

Lighting

Because this was taken when the sun didn't particularly want to be a team player, I used a circular translucent reflector to block the harsh light. I also used an OCF and had an assistant hold the lacrosse stick in the position shown.

Nikon D800, Westcott Illuminator Reflector, MeFOTO tripod,

Inspiration

I was hired to take some photos of a high school senior and because the shooting location lacked great lighting and background, I had to get creative.

Editing

I first took the image through Lightroom to adjust lighting and color temp as well as adjusting the eyes. Because one eye was in shadow, I decided to bring the exposure on that one up then I added a little color and clarity to both eyes. I then took the image into Photoshop to get rid of blemishes etc. and lastly took it into Nic Color Efex Pro to help the whole image pop.

In my camera bag

Duct tape, always duct tape! Batteries, flashlight, extra sd cards, chapstick, gum, a variety of lenses, an OCF, my camera of course and lens filters. Oh yes, and pepper spray, I do a lot of shooting out in the middle of nowhere and I'm usually alone so I'm not too keen on wanting to become a snack to any wild animal.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to get creative when shooting for someone else. Let your mind go free and tune into that voice that is asking you to get a little unconventional.
