Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a photography workshop with owls and other birds of prey, it was an intensive day full of shooting!

Time

The dark look on this photo is not just an edit, it was really getting darker since it was in November and it was already around 3pm. Not to mention it was shot in the forest! This was shot after all the static and artistic photos were done, which was a little inverted due to lack of light in November, but newbies had to find their rythm, because shooting birds in flight is extreme!

Lighting

LIghting in this photo was really challenging, as I mentioned, it was shot in the forest, in November, during incoming dusk. Clouds were over the entire sky as well, so no sun was shining, making better mood and softer shadows, which made this photo to stand out. However, shen you put this into soup, your camera settings can go as high as ISO 4000 on f/5.6 if you want to have at least time 1/400 as this photo had (Photos that were made later are in even higher ISO!)

Equipment

I was using a borrowed Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM to get the best result possible. Shot only hand-held, without any flashes, as birds are very sensitive for these kinds of things. Oh and burst shooting and multiple flights were necessary too, of course!

Inspiration

Since most of the epic photos showing wild life are made on workshops, I took an opportunity to attend one of them and it was being held in my city, so why not to challenge myself to try something new! I wanted to make an epic flight photo with this specific pose. It is still not perfect and I will pursue myself for even better photo

Editing

Sure, as all my photos are being post-processed, I used lightroom to color grade the photo and make the eagle owl to stand out. No retouching was done, as it was not necessary

In my camera bag

Usually I carry my trusty Canon 70D with 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8, together with Sigma 24-105 and also Canon 500N, because film is something that still has a soul and always will. I always wanted to shoot more film and since I am a canon shooter I went with a camera that can take my canon lenses

Feedback

To get this kind of shot, find some workshops around your area, there always will be people who have wild animals in their posession. If no workshops are being done, try to find those people to help you, it may be more pricey, but what is better than individual workshop? :) For a camera, try to use something that can handle high speed shooting, higher ISO and a lot of luck! Oh and for sure longer lenses!
