This photo was taken in the middle of nowhere, while on the hike with my friends and dogs. We found this nice little path and thought dogs might look fabulous there.Time
It was quite shortly after noon. It was overcast, so everything was still nice and soft, I didnt have to worry about any special angle. We were almost done with our hike, this was actually our last stop before last section and after that we just had to take the bus back homeLighting
Only natural lighting was used, I dont usually use reflectors or flashes, only in my home studio. Outside it is always the sun or the shade. In this case light was nicely diffused by clouds, which also made really nice glow on the fur of the dog.Equipment
I used borrowed Canon 5D Mk IV along with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, also borrowed. It was quite heavy to carry it during the hike, but thats what you do with borrowed gearInspiration
Color of the fur was nicely in harmony with the grass and yet it popped and made you look at the dog, instead of anywhere else. I thought it was the perfect spot for this kind of shoot as backlight along with nice background and leading lines. I always try to make the dog look natural and to fit into the image. And this is also the same case, where I tried to fit his personality into the picture. You can see his spark in his eyesEditing
As all my pictures, I do post-processing in a way so it boosts one part of the picture while pushing your eyes towards the subject, or any other part of the picture. I get to that spot with darkening some parts and lighting others and also playing with clarity and contrast. As there was quite a lot of wild weed, I had to photoshop some of it our so picture will look cleaner. Silly me did not clean it before shootingIn my camera bag
I carry basicly all my gear in my bag. I dont have a lot of gear, only my trusty Canon 70D, Sigma 24-105mm f/4 Art, Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM and Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM. Along that I also carry my tripod, some food and film DSLR with some film ready if I wanted to shoot a little differentlyFeedback
To get this look, try to find some place where you will get nice blurry background while having the image backlit at least a little. Overcast is your friend and obedient dog is the best you can wish for. If the dog is not obedient, you will spend more time and photos to get the picture right, but its still possible. Also try to get as low as possible and choose the riight focal length. You can manage great results with any lens as long as you know what you want to get done. This photo was taken with a fullframe camera and high-end lens, but I usually shoot with much cheaper setup, crop camera with cheap lens of 85 or 50mm. Also post-processing is very important, lightroom and photoshop are a must as no photo is perfect straight from the camera
