I took this photo at Convict Lake near the town of Mammoth Lakes in the Sierras.Time
I shot this in the evening during sunset right after heavy snows, when the clouds were clearing.Lighting
Sunsets after winter storms tend to be very beautiful and this was no different! Natural lighting and beautiful skies!Equipment
I shot this on a Nikon D810 on a 14-24mm with a fotodiox ND1000 filter (for long exposure), Benro tripod and a remote.Inspiration
I've been to this place a few times before but I always wanted to shoot this after a snowstorm with fresh snow everywhere. So I drove up to this lake during the snowstorm (about 7 hours from Bay Area to this spot) and go the shot I wanted!Editing
I'd to color correct the image as my ND filter gives out a very blue tinge. Used a little bit of Orton effect to give it a glow. And regular processing in lightroom to reduce highlights, increase shadows. I removed a couple of time rocks in the bottom of the image as it was distracting. In my camera bag
I always carry my D810 body with 14-24lens, 70-200mm lens ( for landscape shots from a high vantage point) and 28-70mm for hiking. ND filters, CPL filters, remote and my trusty heavy tripod made by Benro!Feedback
For landscape shots, look for weird weather conditions. A nice warm sunny day isn't the best for photos (maybe some). Snowstorms, heavy rains, clouds breaking giving out colors are what makes the photos pop! So don't be afraid to get to some place because it's raining or is hard to get to, just do it! Of course, your safety is always the most important thing!
