Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a below stairs food preparation area at Berrington Hall, near Leominster.

Time

Late afternoon in November .. The light was directional from a single window

Lighting

The light was poor and I did not have a tripod so it was a case of turning up the ISO to 1600 so that I could hand-hold the camera, even then it was a slow shutter speed at 1/30th second I did not want to use flash to preserve the atmosphere

Equipment

Olympus OMD EM10 mk2 and an M.14-42mm lens set at FL/14mm.

Inspiration

Berrington Hall is a National Trust property that seeks to preserve the authenticity of its exhibits. The servants quarters and food preparation areas give a sense of what life was like when the hall was commissioned In the late 1700's by a London banker, Thomas Harley. He commissioned Lancelot 'Capability' Brown and his son-in-law Henry Holland to create this retirement estate in Herefordshire.

Editing

I always take my photos in RAW and therefore some processing is always necessary. Removal of noise and attention to sharpness detail is necessary as well as contrast. Then the change to black and white which is done in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have several equipment bags for different purposes .. I have an Olympus EM1mark 2 and several Pro lenses and depending on my intention on the day I will carry at least one camera and a couple of lenses. I change lenses infrequently when out shooting, tending to plan ahead what I am going to shoot.

Feedback

Just to be aware of lighting and the need for stability when shooting in low light, I have Olympus micro four thirds cameras which have varying levels of in camera stabilisation... This also helps a lot with natural light shots. obviously a tripod can help a lot but often it may not be present for a variety of reasons. be aware of composition which is often about the feeling that you have for the subject. there are no hard rules but some compositions just work better in certain situations.. experience helps in this respect and honest self appraisal ...
