Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Ca. We had been shooting for about an hour or so and decided to call it. As we were leaving, we saw this small patch of white flowers in some bushes on the side of the road and decided to shoot one last portrait.

Time

I remember that day as being quote bright and sunny. This location was in a small patch of shade but had bright light all around, creating the perfect scene. It was probably 4:30 or 5pm when this was taken.

Lighting

I wanted the focus to be on my model's eyes. Photographing her in the shade with bright light all around me really made her eyes stand out. The shade allowed me to keep her skin looking nice and soft.

Equipment

This photo was taken on a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. Natural light.

Inspiration

I had been talking to Selena (the model pictured) about taking some photos together for a long time. We both eventually had a free day, met up at the park and started shooting some photos and catching up. When we saw this location, we didn't really have a shot in mind. The small patches of flowers were all grouped together perfectly framing her head, so I decided to shoot her portrait nice and close.

Editing

I did some skin retouching on this image. But let's be honest, she doesn't need any editing! Aside from the slight skin retouching, I only color corrected this image and tweaked the curves a bit.

In my camera bag

My usual set up is quite basic. I usually carry either my Canon 5D Mark II with a 50mm lens or my Fujifilm x100. Occasionally I will bring a speedlite along, however, I prefer natural light and reflectors for this kind of shoot.

Feedback

Shoot in the shadows would be my best advice for anyone trying to capture a photo like this. When it's bright outside, shooting in a shadow will help balance your light and your model won't have to squint. It helps keep the whole image soft looking.
