Behind The Lens
Location
There is an old bowling alley in Vancouver and I was doing a series on shoes. The project was called "Same But Different". I asked the attendant if he could line up some shoes on the counter, so I could take the shot.Time
It was taken in the afternoon, indoorsLighting
I used the natural light in the bowling alley which was poor but I had a fast lensEquipment
I was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II, with an EF 50mm 1.4 USM lens. That allowed me to take it handheld at 1/25 second at ISO 100 at F1.4.Inspiration
I was working on an assignment called "Same But Different" for a course I was taking. I decided to shoot rows of shoes wherever I could find them. The bowling alley was one stop, shoe stores, people at crosswalks etc.Editing
I imported the photo into Lightroom, and I just checked the history and other than set the profile to Camera Portrait, I made no other adjustments. It was a stipulation of the project that we had to shoot straight out of the camera with minimal processing. In my camera bag
It depends on what I am going out to shoot. I have a range of lens from wide angle to long telephoto and a couple of primes (50mm and 85mm). I have a set of filters if I want to do long exposure, a sturdy lightweight graphite tripod and shutter release.Feedback
This is a simple repeating pattern shot. I had actually wanted to shoot the shoes stacked in the shelves but the lighting was too dark.. Fortunately I chatted a bit with the attendant who was then nice enough to pull a few shoes out and set them up on the counter. So as always it's good to make friends with people working in a place, so they will help you a bit. While I now wish I had my tripod and some better lighting, that would have required a negotiation with the owner, so using a fast lens was an imperative to get a hand held shot without a lot of fuss or preparation.
