Behind The Lens

Location

This is TableTop taken from the parking lot at Artist Point on Mt. Baker near Bellingham, WA. I was there with the Olympia Camera Club to take fall images. I had bad knees and walking was limited for me. Upon arrival at the sight all the others took off exploring trails, while I hung out in the parking lot. This image won the landscape category with the Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest several years ago, along with several other competitive awards.

Time

I think this was probably mid-morning.

Lighting

One advantage of the Pacific Northwest is lots of clouds, so you can get good images most any time of day.

Equipment

I hand-held my Sony A 350 with my Tamron 18-250 lens.

Inspiration

Another advantage of living in the PNW is being surrounded by extreme beauty. Over the years, I developed my own method of scanning the landscape as if I am looking through the lens. When my eye came to this view, I saw the contrast of the fall and the oncoming winter, the rich colors in the foreground, the almost monotone background and the clouds. It all fell together using the rule of thirds to the extreme.

Editing

I confess to increasing the saturation on this one. Other than that I only boosted clarity a bit, and adjusted levels as I normally would.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it simple. I wear a vest so I can keep my most used essentials close at hand. In addition to my Tamron lens, spare batteries, memory cards, and filters, I usually have my wide angle lens with me. I wear a vest so I can keep my most used essentials close at hand. My tripod stays in the car, so I have it if I want it.

Feedback

My first rule of photography is SHOW UP. You can't get the image if you don't go to where it is, not likely it will come to you.
