I have bad knees so sometimes I just see what I can do at home. This was taken on a beautiful day, and I wanted to do something outside. I simply placed the amaryllis on my patio table. The background is a hedge wall separating my house from the street in Olympia.Time
I don't really recall what time of day it was. but here in Washington state there are a lot of gray days, so the ambient light can be consistent for most of the day.Lighting
Here in Washington state there are a lot of gray days, so the ambient light can be consistent for most of the day. Since I am sensitive to bright light, these gray days suit me well.Equipment
I was using my Sony A-100, my first DSLR. I also used my Monfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I have found that when I am stressed or feeling down that photography brings me into the moment and guides me to search for the beautiful and positive things that are always at hand if we only open our eyes. I probably spent about an hour focused on this one flower and loved every minute of it.Editing
This image simply did not require any post-processing aside from the standard I apply to all my photos-add clarity and adjust levels in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I now have a Sony A-6000. I usually carry my Tameron zoom lens, which is almost always on my camera, and a Minolta wide angle lens. I also always have a polarizing lens for those days that are bright. My Manfroto tripod and head have always served me well, and I plan on using them for a very long time.Feedback
I was shooting just the flower sans water for a while and I realized it needed something to set it apart. I got out my trusty spray bottle and misted the flower and shot for a while longer. I tried to get some drops on the stamen, but wasn't having any luck so I used glycerin to add the drops. With that I got the drops I wanted. I then took the time to vary the angle, speed and aperture and finally got what I wanted. Sometimes it takes a lot of creativity and patience!
